In AP this week he offers a few top tips for shooting urban portraits.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Find Your Location<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-05-800.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37790\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-05-800.jpg\" alt=\"Lovegrove-UP-05 800\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-05-800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-05-800.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-05-800.jpg?resize=600,400 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-05-800.jpg?resize=562,374 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>Damien starts with Google Earth, and in particular Google Street View, looking for environments with multi-level zones such as bridge and tunnels. This will provide the environment necessary for controlling the light. This is also useful for finding suitable backgrounds like a stainless steel shutter or a wall of glass with interesting reflections.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got an idea for a location, you\u2019ll also need to use Google Maps to find a suitable meeting spot for you and your subject, as well as parking.<\/p>\n<p>Damien also recommends having a recce around the location before you shoot \u2013 as well as planning the technical requirements, you can also check it\u2019s completely safe to use.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Get the right gear<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/RF60_2-800.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37787\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/RF60_2-800.jpg\" alt=\"RF60_2 800\" width=\"800\" height=\"863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/RF60_2-800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/RF60_2-800.jpg?resize=300,324 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/RF60_2-800.jpg?resize=371,400 371w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/RF60_2-800.jpg?resize=562,606 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>You\u2019ll need to be well equipped. Damien recommends at least one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cactus-image.com\/rf60.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cactus RF60 <\/a>flashgun (above), its matching<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cactus-image.com\/v6.html\" target=\"_blank\"> V6 transceiver<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovegroveconsulting.com\/lastolite_stands.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Lastolite Jupiter stand<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovegroveconsulting.com\/flash_bracket.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Lovegrove flash bracket<\/a>. This combination will allow you to freely place the light wherever you wish and precisely control the look and feel of your shoot.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Light it Right<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-06-800.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37791\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-06-800.jpg\" alt=\"Lovegrove-UP-06 800\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-06-800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-06-800.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-06-800.jpg?resize=600,400 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Lovegrove-UP-06-800.jpg?resize=562,374 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>You need to have control of the light, so finding a location that blocks natural light from at least one direction is a good idea. Damien finds an area with relatively little ambient light then adds his own with one or two flashguns.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Mix the Colours<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Colour.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37793\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Colour.jpg\" alt=\"Colour\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Colour.jpg 800w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Colour.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Colour.jpg?resize=600,400 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/10\/Colour.jpg?resize=562,374 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>Playing with colour temperature is a great way to get interesting, dynamic effects. Try a warm gel on the flashgun and a cold white balance setting on the camera to keep the surrounding areas blue while maintaining a warm glow on the subject.<\/p>\n<h2>5.
