{"id":43284,"date":"2015-02-04T10:06:35","date_gmt":"2015-02-04T10:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amateurphotographer.co.uk\/?p=43284"},"modified":"2015-04-27T14:32:32","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T13:32:32","slug":"sony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/photo-news\/sony\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Modest master\u2019 photographer Elliott Erwitt wins Sony gong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(c) Elliott Erwitt\/ MAGNUM PHOTOS<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, released today, Sony World Photography Awards organisers said: \u2018Recognised worldwide for his candid and often ironic black &amp; white images capturing everyday life, Elliott Erwitt is a modest master who approaches both his commercial and personal work with the same wry and witty visual brilliance.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Astrid Merget Motsenigos, creative director of the World Photography Awards Organisation, added: \u2018Elliott is entirely unique and independent in every way.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Photography is part of his very fabric, but he also clearly separates what he calls his \u201chobby\u201d from his client work.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018To most, there will be no noticeable difference between the two.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;That is what makes him a master.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Erwitt, 86, once said: \u2018To me, photography is an art of observation, it\u2019s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The photographer\u00a0is set to deliver a public talk to coincide with the opening of an exhibition of his work at Somerset House in London from 24 April-10 May.<\/p>\n<p>Erwitt, a French-born American whose career spans 60 years, joined the famed Magnum Photos agency in 1953.<\/p>\n<p>The photographer\u2019s high-profile subjects include President Nixon and Marilyn Monroe.<\/p>\n<p>The Somerset House exhibition will focus on Erwitt\u2019s vast collection of book publications, archive prints, a digital presentation of his favourite photos, plus a selection of his films.<\/p>\n<p>Erwitt will\u00a0give a talk on 24 April,\u00a0in conversation with his book designer Stuart Smith.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43282\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/FRANCE.-Paris.-1952.-MG1499.web_.jpg\" alt=\"FRANCE.
