The news<\/a> prompted Amateur Photographer<\/em>\u00a0(AP) to ask a few major UK museums about\u00a0their policies on selfie sticks, which led us to look into their wider policies\u00a0on photography for visitors.<\/p>\n

The Tate operates the Tate Modern and Tate Britain museums in London, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St Ives in Cornwall.\u00a0A spokeswoman told us: \u2018Tate allows the use of selfie sticks, provided that users respect fellow visitors and adhere to the Tate\u2019s photography policy.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Tate\u2019s policy on visitor photography states: \u2018Photography in the main galleries is allowed for personal, non-commercial purposes only.<\/p>\n

\u2018It is the visitor\u2019s responsibility to ensure no copyright is infringed.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Tate bans the use of flash and tripods. And\u00a0its museums do not allow photography at paying exhibitions at \u2018any time\u2019.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London said: \u2018Visitors to the V&A are currently permitted to use selfie sticks in line with the museum\u2019s general policy on photography and filming with a handheld camera for personal use.\u2019<\/p>\n

But the V&A did not rule out a future change in policy on selfie sticks, by telling AP: \u2018All policies relating to the safety of the V&A\u2019s visitors and collections are reviewed on an ongoing basis.\u2019<\/p>\n

Although flash is allowed inside the V&A’s galleries, tripods, monopods and \u2018supplementary video lighting\u2019 are\u00a0not.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly,\u00a0commercial photography is not allowed, either.<\/p>\n

The National Media Museum (NMM), based in Bradford, West Yorkshire, effectively serves as the nation\u2019s photography museum. It houses more than 250,000 images and 8,000 pieces of photographic equipment from the Royal Photographic Society Collection.<\/p>\n

An NMM spokesman told us: \u2018We constantly assess any risks to our exhibits and visitors, and at present selfie sticks are not considered a problem.\u2019<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018We would always request visitors be aware of their own and others\u2019 safety when inside the museum.\u2019<\/p>\n

The NMM is part of the Science Museum Group, which does not permit photography \u2018for anything other than private, non-commercial, purposes\u2019.<\/p>\n

However, the\u00a0group also requires visitors to obtain permission from anyone they photograph inside its\u00a0five museums nationwide.<\/p>\n

The Science Museum Group\u2019s photography policy states: \u2018Visitors are not permitted\u2026 to make any recording or take any photograph of any person without the authorisation of that person.\u2019<\/p>\n

Clearly, a selfie-stick user will have no problem getting permission from themselves as the subject, but if they happen to take pictures of anyone else that could be an issue.<\/p>\n\"selfie<\/a>\n
