How AP covered the story last year. \u00a0The image, called \u2018Phantom\u2019, sold for $6.5m. It is a black & white version of \u2018Ghost\u2019, a photo Lik captured at Antelope Canyon in Arizona<\/em><\/p>\n

When Peter Lik sold one of his images for $6.5m last year, his PR people were quick to point out that this made it the world\u2019s \u2018most expensive photograph\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It sold to an unnamed private buyer who preferred not to be identified for \u2018security and privacy reasons\u2019.<\/p>\n

Since then, some have questioned the marketing methods used by Lik and the way he targets potential buyers who have a high disposable income, in places such as Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip\u00a0where the photographer runs\u00a0one of\u00a0a\u00a0string of\u00a0galleries.<\/p>\n

A recent New York Times<\/em> (NYT) article<\/a> pointed out that the most anyone has ever paid for a Lik photo at auction is $15,860, citing figures compiled by the Artnet database.<\/p>\n

Yet, he has amassed $440 million in print sales, Lik\u2019s chief financial officer told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

\u2018He stands apart from the mainstream art market, but he has benefited from the hype that surrounds it,\u2019 continued the NYT article, which explained that Lik exploits a technique used by artists who make several copies of their work and raise prices as each one is snapped up.<\/p>\n

\u2018Mr Lik vastly expands that concept, selling 950 limited editions and 45 artist\u2019s proofs of every photograph\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2018Every time a limited edition sells another 10%, the price ticks up, in increments as they grow\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2018When all the copies of a photograph are sold, it can gross the company more than $7 million.’<\/p>\n

Separately, art market website\u00a0artnet.c<\/a>om<\/span>\u00a0accuses Lik of \u2018artificially inflating his market\u2019 and \u2018selling pretty, pleasing, banal images that are wildly popular with a certain class of inexperienced collectors, but are barely recognised by the art establishment\u2019.<\/p>\n

Lik now hits back.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Amateur Photographer<\/em> (AP), a Las Vegas representative of Lik\u2019s public relations firm, R & R Partners, said: \u2018We do not feel the statements made about artificially inflated prices are accurate.<\/p>\n

\u2018The prices for Peter Lik\u2019s photos are set up based on availability.<\/p>\n

\u2018However, recent headlines have questioned the validity of Peter Lik\u2019s recent $6.5 million sale of \u201cPhantom\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018The fact remains, the sale is documented and legitimate.<\/p>\n

\u2018The buyer wishes to remains anonymous due to privacy reasons.\u2019<\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/em> studied the way Lik achieves high prices for his work, pointing out that previous records in photography were set by \u2018competing bidders in public auctions for images that were familiar and celebrated\u2019.<\/p>\n

The NYT article, published on 21 February, added: \u2018This was a private sale for a newly printed photograph, and scant details were offered.\u2019<\/p>\n

The photographer\u2019s PR people supplied AP with details of Los Angeles lawyer Joshua Roth, who represented the buyer of \u2018Phantom\u2019 \u2013 should the magazine\u00a0wish to seek confirmation\u00a0that the sale actually took place.<\/p>\n

Roth has previously confirmed to\u00a0the New York Times<\/em> that the client does exist.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the controversial photograph, Lik said at the time<\/a>: \u2018The purpose of all my photos is to capture the power of nature and convey it in a way that inspires someone to feel passionate and connected to the image.\u2019<\/p>\n

Explaining how he takes an artistic approach to landscape work, Lik added: \u2018Certain textures and contours found in nature lend themselves beautifully to black &\u00a0white photography.<\/p>\n

\u2018The intensity of contrasting light and dark spaces was surprising, but make for some of the most powerful images I\u2019ve ever created.\u2019<\/p>\n

Born in Australia, Lik emigrated to the US in 1984, where he discovered a passion for panoramic photography.<\/p>\n

Lik became a US citizen in 2013 and his work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
