Amateur French scientist Joseph Nic\u00e9phore Ni\u00e9pce captured the first surviving photograph from nature around 1826.<\/p>\n

Ni\u00e9pce \u2013 who worked with French pioneer Louis Daguerre \u2013 created permanent images by exposing chemicals on metal plates to light, a process known as heliography.<\/p>\n

Now, three of his glass plates \u2013 of which there are believed to be only 16 in existence \u2013 are set to go on show at the National Media Museum (NMM) in Bradford, West Yorkshire.<\/p>\n

Ni\u00e9pce was not only able to develop his\u00a0images, but he was also able to fix them, having first experimented by copying drawings through the action of light, subsequently applying the technique to hand-drawn etchings.<\/p>\n

They form part of the NMM\u2019s Drawn by Light exhibition, which runs from 20 March-21 June.<\/p>\n

Ni\u00e9pce is believed to have contributed to Daguerre\u2019s discovery of the light sensitivity of iodised silver plates in 1831.<\/p>\n\"Le<\/a>\n

Separately, various portraits by British photography pioneer Julia Margaret Cameron<\/a> starred at a recent auction in London.<\/p>\n

An albumen print of Cameron\u2019s ‘The Dream, 1869’ raised \u00a318,600 at the Bloomsbury Auctions of 19th and 20th Century Photographs from a Private Collection, while her 1867 portrait of Julia Jackson (the mother of writer Virginia Woolf) fetched \u00a313,640.<\/p>\n

Gustave Le Gray\u2019s ‘Panorama du Port de S\u00e8te, 1857’ shattered its presale estimate of \u00a32,000-3,000, bowing out for \u00a39,300.<\/p>\n

However, photos by British photography inventor William Henry Fox Talbot \u2013 billed as a highlight of the auction \u2013 failed to reach their reserve price.<\/p>\n

Among them was \u2018The Fruit Sellers, Lacock Abbey\u2019, captured around 1845, that had been expected to fetch up to \u00a315,000.<\/p>\n

The lots also included Man Ray\u2019s \u2018Mannequin de Man Ray\u2019 (1938) \u2013 which fetched \u00a36,820 \u2013 alongside a larger body of his work documenting the Exposition Internationale du Surr\u00e9alisme.<\/p>\n
