Photo Stealers<\/a>\u00a0aims to expose people who have used copyrighted images without permission.<\/p>\n

But the site says it received a jaw-dropping response to an enquiry about its Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shock reply<\/strong><\/p>\n

Photo Stealers was stunned when it\u00a0received this emailed reply from a sales representative at the social media giant:<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2026once something is posted or uploaded onto Facebook it becomes Facebook\u2019s property.’<\/p>\n

The response added: \u2018So, if the original photographer uploaded the photo first onto Facebook and then others have taken it from there and uploaded it to their pages or profiles, this is legal and within policy, there\u2019s nothing I can do about it unfortunately even if they are taking credit for the photos.\u2019<\/p>\n

\nIn response to the rights\u00a0controversy, a spokesperson for Facebook\u2019s UK office told Amateur Photographer<\/em>: \u2018The information given in these emails is incorrect.<\/p>\n

\u2018Our terms are clear that you own the content you share on Facebook, including photos.<\/p>\n

\u2018When you post something, you simply grant Facebook a licence to use that content consistent with our terms, including displaying it to the audience you\u2019ve shared it with.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2022 This is not the first time Facebook has been caught in an image rights furore involving a staff member.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last year, Facebook reversed its controversial decision<\/a> to ban a photograph of a four-year-old girl planting flowers, blaming human error, following a backlash among photographers online.<\/p>\n

Amateur Photographer<\/em> reported how photographer Penny Halsall was left distraught by Facebook\u2019s removal of the portrait of daughter Daisy.<\/p>\n

The image had won plaudits in the Amateur Photographer of the Year competition. But it was removed from the Amateur Photographer<\/em> Facebook page last summer on grounds that it breached the site’s\u00a0rules on nudity.<\/p>\n

Facebook\u2019s UK office said the image had been removed in error by a member of its community standards team, who misinterpreted Facebook\u2019s guidelines.<\/p>\n
