The USA’s Transportation Security
\nAdministration says travellers may be asked to ‘power up’ some electronic
\ndevices, including mobile phones, before boarding direct flights to the US <\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n

[NEWS UPDATE WEDNESDAY 9 JULY] <\/strong><\/p>\n

The UK’s Department of Transport has extended the scope of the policy to some routes, both to and from the UK.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: \u2018Passengers on some routes may also be required to show that electronic devices in their hand luggage can be powered up or face not being allowed to bring the device onto the aircraft.<\/p>\n

\u2018Passengers are therefore advised to make sure electronic devices being carried in their hand luggage are charged before they travel.’<\/p>\n

A Department for Transport spokesman today refused to say whether passengers should expect that their cameras may be checked at the airport.<\/p>\n

However, ‘cameras and camera equipment’ are included in the Department for Transport’s definition of ‘electrical devices’ that are allowed in hand luggage, in a list published on its website<\/a>. <\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

British Airways statement:<\/strong><\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

‘Customers may be asked to turn on any
\nelectronic or battery powered devices such as telephones, tablets, e-books and
\nlaptops in front of security teams and\/or demonstrate the item’s functionality.<\/em><\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

‘If, when asked to do so, you are unable to
\ndemonstrate that your device has power, you will not be allowed to fly on your
\nplanned service.’<\/em><\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Though BA does not mention ‘cameras’ among
\nthe devices its customers may be asked to switch on, a BA spokesman
\nagreed it would sensible for passengers to ensure their cameras are charged
\nbefore travelling to the US. <\/strong><\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

BA says the new regulations<\/a>, published on
\nthe airline’s website, were drawn from advice it received from the
\nTransportation Security Administration in the US, which refers to ‘electronic
\ndevices’.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yesterday,
\nthe US-based Transportation Security Administration (TSA) updated its security
\nadvice affecting \u2018certain overseas airports’.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

In
\na statement<\/a>,
\ndated 6 July, the TSA said: \u2018As the travelling public knows, all electronic
\ndevices are screened by security officers.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

\u2018During
\nthe security examination, officers may also ask that owners power up some
\ndevices, including cell phones.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

\u2018Powerless
\ndevices will not be permitted on board the aircraft. <\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

‘The
\ntraveller will also undergo additional screening.’<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

It
\nis not clear, however, whether such devices include digital cameras.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

A
\nspokesman for the UK’s Department for Transport would not be drawn on whether
\ncameras fall under the definition of \u2018electronic devices’, saying that the
\ninterpretation was \u2018up to you’.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

\u2018The
\nadvice is the advice,’ the spokesman told Amateur
\nPhotographer<\/em>.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Heathrow
\nis among the airports where security screening has been intensified, according
\nto the BBC<\/a>. <\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Earlier
\ntoday, Heathrow Airport declined to comment on the new security measures when
\ncontacted by Amateur Photographer<\/em>,
\nreferring us to the Department for Transport.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Heathrow
\nAirport has since posted this message<\/a>
\non its website: ‘If you are flying to the US please make sure any of your
\nelectronic devices are charged before you travel.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

‘If
\nyour device does not switch on you may not be allowed to bring it onto the
\naircraft.’ <\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Last
\nweek, the Department for Transport said that most airline passengers \u2018should
\nnot experience significant disruption’, and that there was no change to the
\nthreat level, which remains at substantial.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

In
\na statement<\/a>,
\ndated 2 July, it added: \u2018The safety and security of the public is our paramount
\nconcern. <\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

‘The
\nUK has some of the most robust aviation security measures and we will continue
\nto take all the steps necessary to ensure that public safety is maintained.’<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

The
\nDepartment for Transport said it would not be commenting on the detail of the
