{"id":55416,"date":"2015-07-07T10:45:01","date_gmt":"2015-07-07T09:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amateurphotographer.co.uk\/?p=55416"},"modified":"2015-07-09T08:16:05","modified_gmt":"2015-07-09T07:16:05","slug":"spectacular-images-revealed-in-record-breaking-astronomy-photographer-of-the-year-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/photo-news\/spectacular-images-revealed-in-record-breaking-astronomy-photographer-of-the-year-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Spectacular&#8217; images revealed in record-breaking Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Ascent of Angels\u00a0<\/em>\u00a9 Brad Goldpaint<\/p>\n<p>The Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year pulled in more than 2,700 \u2018spectacular\u2019 entries, the highest number in the competition&#8217;s seven-year history.<\/p>\n<p>Shortlisted shots included Ascent of Angels (above) by Brad Goldpaint from the USA, showing an \u2018astonishing view of a meteor piercing through the darkness as the Milky Way towers above the 4,392m peak of Mount Rainier in Washington\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers added: &#8216;The phenomenal natural light show of a lightning storm emanating from below ominous storm clouds juxtaposed with the gleaming stars of our galaxy above them; and an enthralled stargazer immersed in the stars as the luminous purple sky is mirrored in the thin sheet of water across the world\u2019s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Winners of the nine categories and two special prizes will be announced on 17 September at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, before going on show in a free exhibition the next day.<\/p>\n<p>The overall winner will pocket \u00a32,500.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers praised the Astronomy Photographer of the Year for going from \u2018strength to strength\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Entries were submitted via a dedicated Flickr group.<\/p>\n<p>To view the entries visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/astrophoto\">www.flickr.com\/groups\/astrophoto<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s judges include comedian and astronomy enthusiast Jon Culshaw.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/The-Night-the-Sky-Exploded-\u00a9-Kris-Williams.web_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55414\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/The-Night-the-Sky-Exploded-\u00a9-Kris-Williams.web_.jpg\" alt=\"The Night the Sky Exploded \u00a9 Kris Williams.web\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/07\/The-Night-the-Sky-Exploded-\u00a9-Kris-Williams.web_.jpg 640w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/07\/The-Night-the-Sky-Exploded-\u00a9-Kris-Williams.web_.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/07\/The-Night-the-Sky-Exploded-\u00a9-Kris-Williams.web_.jpg?resize=600,400 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/07\/The-Night-the-Sky-Exploded-\u00a9-Kris-Williams.web_.jpg?resize=562,375 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><em>The Edge of the Aurora \u00a9 <\/em>O Chul Kwon (Korea)<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2028A rare sighting of a red aurora, caused by the emission of high-altitude oxygen, captured on film, dancing over Yellowknife, the capital city of the Northwest Territories in Canada. Emanating from the Sun\u2019s photosphere; its outer shell from which light is emitted, prominences extend to the corona, which is the aura of the plasma surrounding it.
