{"id":5823,"date":"2014-06-05T14:56:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T13:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amateurphotographer.co.uk\/uncategorized\/photographer-hits-back-at-tribal-images-baloney-attack-5823"},"modified":"2014-09-02T12:20:14","modified_gmt":"2014-09-02T11:20:14","slug":"photographer-hits-back-at-tribal-images-baloney-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/photo-news\/photographer-hits-back-at-tribal-images-baloney-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Photographer hits back at tribal images \u2018baloney\u2019 attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n    <sup><br \/>\n      <em>Picture: Nelson&#8217;s book, Before They Pass Away<\/em><br \/>\n    <\/sup>\n  <\/p>\n<p>In 2010, UK-born photographer Jimmy Nelson set out to find the world&#8217;s \u2018last indigenous cultures&#8217;, to document them for future generations in his book <em>Before They Pass Away<\/em>, first published as a coffee-table version last October.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson says the project was designed to be a &#8216;controversial catalyst for further discussion as to the authenticity of these fragile, disappearing, cultures&#8217;. <\/p>\n<p>However, earlier this week he came under attack from Stephen Corry, director of Survival International, who wrote a review of the book on the Truthout website.<\/p>\n<p>Corry accuses Nelson of \u2018hubristic baloney&#8217; and of documenting people \u2018as they looked a generation or two earlier&#8217;. Some images are a \u2018photographer&#8217;s fantasy&#8217;, he claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The subjects are posed as if they were models in the advertising salons where Nelson developed his career,&#8217; wrote Corry in his review.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the accusations, Nelson, who used a 4x5in camera on his travels, told <em>Amateur Photographer<\/em> that his subjects were \u2018directed, staged to portray the various individuals&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>But, he adds, \u2018it was done in co-operation and consent, and entails much more of their own way to present themselves than my small adjustments, and maybe improvements, in the most celebrated light technically possible&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/keyassets.timeincuk.net\/inspirewp\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/06\/Drokpa_HR.low_.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/img>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    <sup><em>Picture credit: Jimmy Nelson\u00a0<\/em> <\/sup>\n  <\/p>\n<p>Corry questions how much Nelson&#8217;s images portray reality. \u2018In his photos of the Waorani Indians of Ecuador, he has them unclothed, except for their traditional waist string.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Indians are not only shorn of their everyday clothes, but also of other manufactured ornaments such as watches and hair clips.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In real life, contacted Waorani have routinely worn clothes for at least a generation, unless, that is, they are &#8220;dressing up&#8221; for tourists&#8230;&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Nelson retorts that his photos are as real as any since the invention of the medium in 1839, arguing that every image is a \u2018subjective, creative document of the photographer&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They are all real pictures of real people. All the images represent who they really are.
