\"9405<\/a>‘Man In Polyester Suit’<\/em> by\u00a0Robert Mapplethorpe [Photo credit: \u00a9 Sotheby’s]<\/p>\n

The \u2018Man in Polyester Suit\u2019 \u2013 showing a man with his penis exposed \u2013 was impounded by customs officials in London ahead of an exhibition in 1983.<\/p>\n

However, the contentious photo fetched $478,000 (around \u00a3312,000) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York \u2013 easily surpassing its presale estimate of $250,000-$300,000.<\/p>\n

The rare, signed 18x14in print of \u2018Man in Polyester Suit\u2019 was created in 1980 at the height of a career that began when Mapplethorpe was given a Polaroid camera in 1971.<\/p>\n

\u2018The subject of \u2018Man in Polyester Suit\u2019 is Mapplethorpe\u2019s lover Milton Moore, with whom he had a tempestuous and ultimately doomed relationship,\u2019 explained\u00a0Sotheby\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u2018It is a testament to Mapplethorpe\u2019s talent that out of the messiness of his physical and emotional entanglement with Moore he could create this technically perfect, highly stylised and cheekily transgressive image\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2018In a body of work generally considered controversial, \u2018Man in Polyester Suit\u2019 was, from the start, one of Mapplethorpe\u2019s most conspicuous images.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was exhibited in no fewer than 20 international museum and gallery venues during his lifetime.\u2019<\/p>\n

These venues included London\u2019s Institute of Contemporary Art. Sotheby\u2019s continued: \u2018The photograph was famously impounded by customs officials at Heathrow Airport upon its arrival in London for that exhibition, along with Mapplethorpe\u2019s portrait of artist Louise Bourgeois holding a phallic sculpture.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
