Having done that, I selected the Radial Filter tool and added a Radial Filter adjustment that darkened the outer area. With the Mask option ticked, I switched to the Brush edit mode, then with \u2018Auto Mask\u2019 ticked, I selectively edited the mask to mask everything but the woman in this scene.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Fine-tuning<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/step210.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64516\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/step210.jpg\" alt=\"Step2- fine tuning\" width=\"600\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/step210.jpg 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/step210.jpg?resize=300,207 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/step210.jpg?resize=581,400 581w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/step210.jpg?resize=562,387 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Having established a satisfactory mask for the woman, I then set about fine-tuning the Radial Filter adjustment settings. I applied -61 Contrast in order to soften the tones in the surrounding forest. I also applied a -32 Highlights setting to dull the highlights and I added a +19 Saturation boost to make the colours appear more vibrant.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Improving tonal contrast<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/step311.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64514\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/step311.jpg\" alt=\"Step3-tonal contrast\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/step311.jpg 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/step311.jpg?resize=300,198 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/step311.jpg?resize=562,371 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>In this final step I switched to the Basic panel, where I applied the settings shown here to improve the overall global tonal contrast and expand the tonal range. You will notice that I also desaturated the overall Vibrance \u2013 since there was now a nice colour contrast between the woman and the forest, the saturation could do with being tamed slightly.<\/p>\n<h2>Camera Raw filter adjustment masking<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ACRFiltermask.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64518\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ACRFiltermask.jpg\" alt=\"ACR Filtermask\" width=\"507\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/ACRFiltermask.jpg 507w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/ACRFiltermask.jpg?resize=300,355 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/10\/ACRFiltermask.jpg?resize=338,400 338w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/a>When working with Camera Raw in Photoshop CC, you have the ability to Brush edit the mask used for filtered adjustments, \u2028such as when working with the Graduated or Radial Filter adjustments. This gives you dual control over the adjustment masking, resulting in a precise, manually edited mask, as well as a dynamic, soft-edge-adjustable mask that can be controlled separately using the regular filter adjustment edit controls. It usually helps if you tick the Mask option when working in Brush edit mode so you can clearly see the effect your brushwork is having on the mask. Sometimes it can be useful to check the Auto Mask option, which will help the Brush tools auto select areas based on tone and colour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photoshop guru Martin Evening sorts out your photo-editing and post-processing problems.
