{"id":68993,"date":"2016-01-26T15:08:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T15:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amateurphotographer.co.uk\/?p=68993"},"modified":"2016-01-26T15:36:12","modified_gmt":"2016-01-26T15:36:12","slug":"sir-kenneth-corfield-founder-of-last-successful-british-camera-range-dies-aged-91","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/photo-news\/sir-kenneth-corfield-founder-of-last-successful-british-camera-range-dies-aged-91\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Kenneth Corfield, the man behind the \u2018last successful\u2019 British camera range, dies aged 91"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The legendary Periflex camer<\/em>a [Photo credit: \u00a9\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/User:Jan_von_Erpecom\">Jan von Erpecom]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kenneth Corfield will perhaps be best remembered in photographic circles for the Periflex camera, which debuted in 1953 as an interchangeable-lens 35mm camera with an unusual through-the-lens periscope reflex rangefinder.<\/p>\n<p>Later models to challenge strong 35mm competition from Germany included the Periflex Interplan from 1961, which dispensed with the periscope mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth will also be remembered for a distinguished career, which led to his chairmanship of Standard Telephones &amp; Cables.<\/p>\n<p>He was awarded a Knighthood for services to export in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>Paying tribute, Michael Pritchard, director general of the Royal Photographic Society, told <em>Amateur Photographer<\/em>: \u2018I first met Sir Ken in the 1980s, when he would attend the camera auctions at Christie&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Despite his role as a leader of industry he was always an engineer at heart, as epitomised by his Corfield camera \u2013\u00a0the last successful British camera range.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Sir-Kenneth-Corfield.web_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-68990\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Sir-Kenneth-Corfield.web_.jpg\" alt=\"Sir Kenneth Corfield.web\" width=\"537\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/01\/Sir-Kenneth-Corfield.web_.jpg 537w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/01\/Sir-Kenneth-Corfield.web_.jpg?resize=300,358 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/01\/Sir-Kenneth-Corfield.web_.jpg?resize=336,400 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><\/a><em>Sir Kenneth Corfield <\/em>[Photo, courtesy Linhof Studio]<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kenneth\u2019s Wolverhampton-based company moved to Ireland in 1959, but ceased production in late 1961.<\/p>\n<p>Although the firm shut up shop in 1971, that was not the end of the road for Corfield cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth reformed the company in the 1980s and went on to design a new architectural camera called the Corfield WA 67.<\/p>\n<p>Few people had as much an impact on the British photographic industry as Kenneth, according to Linhof Studio, an Essex-based photographic supplier.<\/p>\n<p>Managing director Paula Pell-Johnson said: \u2018I was 19 years old when I first met Sir Kenneth. He walked into our small showroom in London WC1 and purchased a Linhof camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our friendship was formed and after losing my father when I was in my early 20s, Sir Kenneth became my \u201cgo-to\u201d person for all things business.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He was the most generous person with his time and knowledge, and I was both privileged and blessed to have had such a mentor.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our lunches together and with work friends will always be remembered fondly. But my favourite times were our regular chats over coffee in his offices, discussing new technology and the ever-changing face of the photographic industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018His finger was always on the pulse until his retirement in his mid-80s.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schoolboy passion for photography<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Born on 27 January 1924, Kenneth first became interested in photography aged 10 when he acquired a Kodak box Brownie, according to <em>The Corfield Story<\/em>, written by Bev Parker.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Photography became his hobby, but a schoolboy\u2019s pocket money didn\u2019t go very far so he built his own enlarger, mixed his own processing chemicals and used out-of-date government surplus photographic paper,\u2019 adds the article, posted on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corfield.org\/camera\/page7.htm\">www.corfield.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After joining Walsall Photographic Society Kenneth won first prize for a photo of roses, aged just 16.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth would continue working from London offices until he was 85.<\/p>\n<p>Pritchard added: \u2018Sir Ken was always friendly and helpful, and willing to answer questions on his cameras.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He remained fascinated by camera technology long after the final Corfield camera was sold and combined his technical background with that of a historian to great effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For many of us his legacy will be the Periflex camera.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In 1961, the Corfield 66 medium-format SLR emerged, of which only 300 were reportedly
