{"id":69677,"date":"2016-02-04T10:36:43","date_gmt":"2016-02-04T10:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amateurphotographer.co.uk\/?p=69677"},"modified":"2016-02-04T12:21:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-04T12:21:00","slug":"backlash-over-plans-to-move-historic-rps-collection-to-london-as-thousands-sign-petition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/photo-news\/backlash-over-plans-to-move-historic-rps-collection-to-london-as-thousands-sign-petition\/","title":{"rendered":"Backlash over plans to move historic RPS Collection to London, as thousands sign petition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Hands, 1930s,<\/em> by Atelier von Behr<br \/>\n\u00a9 RPX\/Royal Photographic Society\/Science &amp; Society Picture Library<\/p>\n<p>The move to the V&amp;A \u2013 expected to take place in the summer \u2013 aims to create an International Photography Resource Centre at the London museum, which already holds 500,000 photos and the \u2018single largest collection on the art of photography in the world\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, more than 11,000 people have backed a petition calling on the government to intervene and prevent the Science Museum Group\u2019s relocation of the 400,000-strong photographic archive.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This is pure asset stripping. It will endanger the long-term viability of the Bradford museum and further concentrate the nation\u2019s cultural treasures in an already grotesquely bloated capital,\u2019 claims a petition launched on <a href=\"https:\/\/you.38degrees.org.uk\/petitions\/stop-the-cultural-asset-stripping-of-bradford-s-national-media-museum?bucket&amp;source=facebook-share-button&amp;time=1454419412\">38degrees.org<\/a> by Neville Walker.<\/p>\n<p>Among those against the proposal is Simon Cooke, leader of the Conservatives at Bradford Council who, in an open letter, wrote: \u2018We don\u2019t have much up here and it fills me with a kind of sad rage that you felt able to visit this act of cultural rape on my city.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Also lobbying against the move to the capital is Bradford South MP Judith Cummins.<\/p>\n<p>Launching a petition on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/ed-vaizey-mp-minister-of-state-for-culture-and-the-digital-economy-the-royal-photography-society-s-world-renowned-collection-must-remain-in-bradford\">change.org<\/a>, Cummins called on the government to \u2018stop the stealth move to downgrade our National Media Museum\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Cummins added: \u2018The National Media Museum is a hugely important part of the cultural offer, not just in Bradford and the region but for the nation as a whole.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em>Amateur Photographer<\/em> has sought comment from the V&amp;A.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" href=\"http:\/\/amateurphotographer.co.uk\/latest\/photo-news\/no-future-national-museum-of-photography-fears-rps-as-its-historic-archive-set-for-london-move-69332#1sMOjdeIur3ftkkM.99\">Monday<\/a>, we reported the RPS\u2019s concern that the move will spell the loss of a \u2018national museum of photography\u2019 which, in the past, has been able to focus on the science as well as the art of photography.<\/p>\n<p>The RPS fears the move to the V&amp;A will lead to a \u2018selective and narrow appreciation of photography\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Although the RPS said it has received a \u2018commitment\u2019 that the collection \u2018will be retained as a distinct entity\u2019 within the V&amp;A, it stressed that the transfer will mean \u2018no future national museum of photography\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement dated 31 January, the RPS said: \u2018While the move will prove beneficial in opening up access to the RPS Collection, the Society is concerned that the absence of a single institution with the curatorial expertise to collect and interpret all aspects of photography beyond its art will lead to a selective and narrow appreciation of photography that existed before the formation of the National Media Museum in 1983 when the V&amp;A and Science Museum worked independently.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The RPS added: \u2018There will be challenges for the V&amp;A, which houses the national collection of art photography, to deal with photographic technology and science that forms a key part of the RPS Collection.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In response, a V&amp;A spokesperson told <em>Amateur Photographer <\/em>on Monday: \u2018V&amp;A photographs curators will take on overall responsibility for the research and conservation of the entire RPS collection and has been held at the NMM in Bradford since 2003, when the institution was called the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television. Before then, it was housed at the RPS\u2019s base in Bath.<\/p>\n<p>As well as precious photos, the RPS archive contains 8,000 pieces of photographic equipment and 31,000 books, periodicals and documents, charting the invention and development of photography over the past 200 years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69666\"
