Tony Cowburn<\/em><\/p>\n

Their entries revealed a \u2018visual feast of extraordinary, moving and inspirational moments\u2019, according to Wanderlust<\/em> travel magazine which organises the annual awards.<\/p>\n

Lyn Hughes, editor-in-chief of Wanderlust <\/em>said: \u2018We\u2019re in awe of this year\u2019s readers and their entries \u2013 they really don\u2019t make the choices easy for us!\u2019<\/p>\n

Tony Cowburn\u2019s atmospheric shot of the Jurassic Coast (above) won the Landscape category \u2013 prompting competition judge and professional photographer Paul Harris to remark: \u2018There is a wildness in this image that you would not associate with Dorset. Crisp, airy and saturated.\u2019<\/p>\n

Vittoria Ricci claimed honours in the wildlife category with a dramatic moment of a hippo escaping a pool in Tanzania, East Africa.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a former school and prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia clinched honours in the People category for Charlotte Currie\u2019s entry entitled \u2018Reflections\u2019.<\/p>\n

Kasia Nowak\u2019s photo of the Tiger\u2019s Nest monastery in Bhutan won plaudits from judge Paul Goldstein who noted: \u2018Photographed literally millions of times, never as well as this.\u2019 The image came top in the Icon category.<\/p>\n

Hughes added: \u2018Every year, I am overwhelmed \u2013 not just by the high standard of photography, but by how inspired and passionate the travellers who captured these images are.<\/p>\n

\u2018As always, it was incredibly tough and an absolute delight to pick just a handful from thousands.\u2019<\/p>\n

The winning portfolio of five themed images captured by a professional photographer was awarded to Christopher Roche who won the \u00a33,000 prize.<\/p>\n

The shortlisted entries were first showcased at the Destinations 2016 event in Manchester.
\nJudges for the 21st Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year included Simon Calder, senior travel editor at The Independent.<\/p>\n

The 40 shortlisted amateur entries were showcased at the Destinations 2016 travel show at Olympia, London from earlier this month.<\/p>\n

The four amateurs bagged photo assignments to Western Australia, courtesy of Austravel.<\/p>\n
