Season: Autumn\/Winter 1989\u201390.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h2>What is stereoscopy?<\/h2>\n<p>Stereoscopy is the technique of creating the illusion of depth by producing two identical images laid side to side, and using a binocular device to view both at the same time \u2013 one through each eye \u2013 to create the appearance to the viewer of a single three-dimensional image. In other words,\u00a0it\u2019s 3-D.<\/p>\n<h2>Stereoscopy and crinoline: what\u2019s the connection?<\/h2>\n<p>The stereoscope became a craze with the Victorian masses at around the same time that the voluminous crinoline underskirt became a popular item of fashion, meaning a wealth of stereoscopic images were in circulation at that time, focusing on, and often deriding, the large hooped underskirts.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-73941\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Stereoscopic-image2.jpg\" alt=\"Stereoscopic image\" width=\"600\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/04\/Stereoscopic-image2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/04\/Stereoscopic-image2.jpg?resize=300,149 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/04\/Stereoscopic-image2.jpg?resize=562,278 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n<p>Crinolines, we learn from May and Pellerin\u2019s book, were actually dangerous and hugely impractical; they were often at the mercy of strong gusts of wind flashing women\u2019s undergarments, caused accidents and were a serious fire hazard. He soon figured out how to make his own stereoscopic images and since then it\u2019s been a lifelong passion for him.<\/p>\n<p>May\u00a0designed his own Owl stereoscope &#8211; named because it looks\u2026 well, like an owl &#8211; which is now produced in large quantities and has become a standard around the world in stereoscopic viewing. We, the authors of this book, decided it was fitting that they should be reunited in the 21st century, and their intimate association recognised at last. This book explores the history of crinoline &#8220;in depth&#8221;.
