Forum competition results for the October 2013 round – The Old and the New<\/h2>\n

We
\nare surrounded by the present and the past. Everywhere we look, the world as it
\nis now and the world as it was function together in harmony. The past and
\npresent are in everything, from the natural world to the architecture that
\nsurrounds us in our towns and cities.
\n

\n <\/p>\n

<\/img><\/p>\n

The
\n winner of the Forum monthly photo competition will receive a National
\nGeographic Earth Explorer NG2346 Midi Messenger Bag. It’s an everyday,
\nfunctional shoulder bag that holds all your personal gear along with a
\ntablet, camera or camcorder and associated accessories worth \u00a379.95
\nprovided by Manfrotto<\/a>. Runners-up will each receive an ‘Amateur Photographer Loves My Pictures’ mug.<\/em> <\/p>\n

For
\nthis round, we asked you to show us old and new in one image. The subjects
\ncould be of anything you wanted and it’s good to see so many variations on the
\ntheme. Of note the shot \u2018Reflecting on the merits of progress…’ by Engineer6
\n– an image that addresses the conflict between analogue and digital, surely a
\nconcept many of us on here are familiar with. I also like mike_morley’s
\n\u2018Getting a Helping Hand’. It was a good decision to convert the image to black
\n& white. It really brings out the detail on the elder subject’s hand and
\nemphasises the maturity that contrast’s with the smooth skin of the infant. Now
\nfor the top three. <\/p>\n

\nRustyknight – Ribbit!<\/strong><\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Rustyknight’s
\nshot of a frog with its spawn was a shot that I noticed right away. The key
\ningredient of a successful wildlife image is to ensure that the eyes are
\npin-sharp. It’s a great way of creating a level of engagement with the viewer.
\nAnd just look at those incredible eyes! Why would you not want to see them in
\ngreat detail? Of course, Rustyknight’s image fits the theme perfectly – a
\nparent with its newly developing young. It’s a great wildlife image and a more
\nthan worthy top-three entry.<\/p>\n

\nSkiddawman – Zaragoaz, Reflections in the Old and Ne<\/strong>w<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

Skiddawman
\nis a regular forum competition entrant and this shot is typical of his ability
\nto produce a unique take on the theme. We saw other shots that contrasted
\narchitecture from differing times, but here Skiddawman has brought the old and
\nthe new crashing together by capturing the reflections in the glass. It’s a
\nvery clever shot.<\/p>\n

\nHelander – Quercus Folium<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

Helander’s
\nshot is very good indeed. It’s an image that took me by surprise, mainly
\nbecause it’s one that I would never have thought to look for when considering
\nthis month’s theme. The bright green leaves contrast perfectly against the
\nbrown of their aged fallen companions. The light is a very beautiful and the
\nrushing water really adds to intoxicating atmosphere. This shot is a real
\nstunner.<\/p>\n
