The gem, which belonged to a British amateur photographer<\/a> who died last year, is one of four Luxus Leica IIs models ever made. <\/p>\n

It bears the serial number \u201888840′ and the whereabouts of the other three models in the series is unknown, said Bonhams ahead of the sale.<\/p>\n

Auctioneers had expected it to fetch between \u00a3480,000-\u00a3720,000 and media reports suggested it may break the \u00a31.7m record<\/a> set last year by another Leica camera. <\/p>\n

However, the Leica IIs bowed out for HK$4.8m (\u00a3386,981 including buyer’s premium). <\/p>\n

When shown to experts on the BBC TV’s Antiques Roadshow<\/a> in 2001 the vintage model was valued at just \u00a35,000.<\/p>\n

The camera comes with a 50mm f\/3.5 Elmar lens and a ‘crocodile’ camera case.<\/p>\n

The owner had acquired the Leica soon after World War II.<\/p>\n

Last year, a different Leica camera<\/a>, an O-Series model, sold for a record \u20ac2,160,000 at the Westlicht auction in Vienna, Austria. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
