The light coming from the headlights of the cars heading away from the camera lit up the road and kerb, but the overall illumination was quite dark. This meant it was possible to process the photograph to achieve a low-key effect, in which the red light trails could be made to stand out more brightly. The following steps show how I was able to apply a series of localised adjustments to contrast &#8211; by selectively darkening and lightening. Here, I applied an adjustment that included a negative darkening Exposure, a negative Highlights and a negative Shadows adjustment.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Add contrast to the road<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79269\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-02.jpg\" alt=\"BenjaminSapsford-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-02.jpg 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-02.jpg?resize=300,201 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-02.jpg?resize=562,376 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n<p>I then added a second Adjustment Brush group. Here, I painted over the road and applied a positive Contrast adjustment combined with a negative Shadows adjustment. This added more contrast to the red tail-light trails.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Add Graduated Filter adjustments<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79270\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-03.jpg\" alt=\"BenjaminSapsford-03\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-03.jpg 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-03.jpg?resize=300,201 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/05\/BenjaminSapsford-03.jpg?resize=562,376 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n<p>Last, to balance the tones, I selected the Graduated Filter and added an adjustment to the bottom to lighten the Exposure.
