It is free and it comes in a multitude of qualities and directions. All you have to do is match the quality to the subject matter and find the best direction for the kind of picture you want to make.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob has made excellent use of some soft diffused daylight falling on his father\u2019s face. The light is coming from behind the camera, and it\u2019s slightly to one side, so one half of the subject\u2019s face is brighter than the other \u2013 which creates depth and a three-dimensional effect. The light really works well here, and the subject is lit in a way that creates highlights and shadows, but without too much \u2028deep black or blown-out highlights.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_93987&quot;  class=\"c-caption alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 526px\">\n\t\t\t<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jacob-Elwood-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-93987\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jacob-Elwood-copy.jpg\" alt=\"After\" width=\"506\" height=\"676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/08\/Jacob-Elwood-copy.jpg 562w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2016\/08\/Jacob-Elwood-copy.jpg?resize=300,400 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">After: The image has been cropped to 4:3 format, and the contrast reduced to reveal more detail<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>Although Jacob has done a great job already, I wanted to see what the shot would look like with even less contrast, so I lifted the shadows a little and pulled down the highlights to create a softer feel. We still have that 3D effect, but it is slightly less harsh and a bit more revealing.<\/p>\n<p>I felt there was too much space above the subject\u2019s head, so I cropped the 3:2 frame to 4:3, then added a moderate warm tone.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lovely picture, Jacob, so keep using that daylight, but don\u2019t feel all your pictures need to follow the proportions of your camera\u2019s sensor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Expert advice and tips on improving your photography from Damien Demolder.
