The plan emerged in a teaser<\/a> Leica published on its website.<\/p>\n

The news will fuel speculation<\/a> over the market Leica plans to target with the Mini M, which it only describes as the \u2018new Leica family member’.<\/p>\n

Leica’s teaser suggests the Mini M will be positioned above the \u00a31,500 Leica X2 compact camera \u2013 which Leica describes as a ‘Micro M’ \u2013 and below the Leica M rangefinder, which costs around \u00a35,100.<\/p>\n

In a joint interview<\/a> with Amateur Photographer <\/em>(AP) and the British Journal of Photography, <\/em>two years ago, Leica CEO Alfred Schopf and chairman Dr Andreas Kaufmann strongly hinted at plans to announce a CSC <\/a>at photokina 2012 in a bid to compete with the likes of Panasonic, Olympus, Sony and Samsung.<\/p>\n

Details were scant, but the camera would feature an imaging sensor at least as large as an APS-C size, according to Schopf who indicated that he saw a market for a Leica camera aimed at the consumer.<\/p>\n

But a year later, it was a different story<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Leica bosses were tight-lipped <\/a>over whether they would release such a CSC after all.<\/p>\n

The Leica chiefs steered journalists away from the idea of such a camera, instead stressing that the ‘M family’ was very high on the agenda.<\/p>\n

At photokina 2012<\/a> Leica unveiled the M-E model, billed as an entry-level rangefinder.<\/p>\n

In an interview at photokina, Leica said it was the firm’s \u2018first answer’ to the growing CSC market, but added that it would never make a ‘\u00a31,000’ CSC.<\/p>\n

At the time, one Amateur Photographer<\/em> reader quipped that the \u00a33,900 M-E was at a price comparable with entry-level for a \u2018NASA moon rocket’<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Amateur Photographer<\/em> and the British Journal of Photography<\/em> were forced to respond<\/a> to a claim that they \u2018misrepresented’ Leica’s mirrorless camera plans in their 2012 interview<\/a>. <\/p>\n

A Leica UK spokesperson had yet to respond to an emailed request for comment at the time of writing. <\/p>\n
